Game Jam

What is a Game Jam?

A game jam is a collaborative event where game developers come together to create games within a set timeframe, usually ranging from a few hours to a few days. The goal is to produce a playable game within the given time constraints, often based on a theme or specific set of rules. Game jams can be held in person or online and can involve individuals or teams working together to create unique and innovative games. Game jams are a great way for developers (in this case, classmates) to experiment with new ideas, showcase their skills, and connect with others in the industry.

Roles and Responsabilities

As a Discord moderator for the game jam, my role was to help maintain a positive and productive community atmosphere on the Discord server during the game jam. This may involve monitoring chat channels and voice channels for any inappropriate behavior or content, responding to questions or concerns from participants, and enforcing the rules of the game jam. I was also responsible for organizing and managing of Discord channels and roles, ensuring that all participants have the resources and support they need to succeed in the game jam.

Alongside the role of Discord moderator, I was also tasked with the role of creating content for the industry week website alongside another classmate. This meant creating a page that would hold all of the key information of what would be happening on the day of the game jam. With this we set out the rules of the event, highlighting the parameters of what each participant can and can’t do. We also included information on how the event would be charitable, having all proceeds go to Juno’s Women’s Aid charity. Finally we added what the winning team of the game jam would receive at the end of the event.

Finally I was assigned the role of on-hand support within the game jam. For this role I had to provide assistance and support to participants as needed throughout the event. This may involve troubleshooting technical issues, answering questions about the game jam rules or resources, providing feedback on game ideas or prototypes, and offering general encouragement to the participants. This also meant setting up and maintaining equipment, such as computers and other hardware, ensuring that all participants have access to the resources they need to create their games. My goal as on-hand support was to help ensure that the game jam runs smoothly and that participants have a positive and rewarding experience.
